Soot marks should always be taking extremely serious as it can be fatal .It indicates a faulty gas combustion . A qualified gas engineer should immediately investigate the causes and remedy. Regards

I have received a comment in the survey report for the house I am about to buy about soot and how heating/hot water system is deemed to be unsafe. The house has a current gas safety cert (April 2015) so I'd like to know how serious this is likely to be? Pressurised hot water system has been drained down before sale for redecoration of walls (I believe).
