Hi, Yes these works would class as 'an addition to an existing circuit' which requires part p notification. Without this, you building insurance would be void if an electrical fault was to develop and the contractor you are using is not listed on the competent persons scheme. The saying buy cheap buy twice applies, accept with the additional risk to life and property. Don't take the chance over a few quid. Registered electricians are assessed every year, up to date with current regulations, and are governed by an overseeing body such as NICEIC. Because of this our costs are higher than those who are not registered. Thus these costs are passed on to the customer.

The new 18th edition regs state that a gas supply coming into a building does not need earth bonding if the incomer is plastic. If its lead it still needs to be connected to the main earth. As the lead pipe is still accessible to you. Meaning you can touch it, I would recommend leaving the earth bonding connected. All metallic pipework, frame works etc that has some kind of link to earth needs to be bonded to the main earth terminal so everything is at the same potential. If your old lead pipe was not bonded to the main earth. There could be a potential difference between the met and the lead pipe causing a voltage between the two. This could be a shock risk. Hi Raymond, the cable size depends on a calculation done by an electrician. To be safe I'd recommend a 10mm 3 core cable. But 6mm could be used depending on the length and cable route. 2.5mm is certainly too small. This will only handle 16 amps not 32amp. If you put a 32 amp breaker on a 2 5mm cable you'll most certainly burn it out almost straight away. And could cause a fire.

Hi, other way round, circuits need to be tested after the new board has been fitted. We have to confirm that the installation is safe, write a certificate then notify building control that the works have been completed. If the electrician is asking to test the circuits and he's NICEIC registered, chances are he's doing/quoting you exactly what needs to be done for your safety and to satisfy part p of the building regulations. Hi, this could be a loose meter cable or somethings come loose in the consumer unit. Or over the Christmas period you may have used quite a bit of power and could have eventually blown the main fuse to the flat. Depending on the size of the flat will depend what rating it is. Either a 60, 80 or 100amp. Most probably a 60amp if it has blown. It's easy to rectify, the fuse itself costs less than £10. And it take s less than 10 minutes to change it. However it might be beneficial to book in a test on the electrical system to dismiss any latent defects that may have contributed to the fault. The bs number for the main fuse is bs1361 type 2 (b). Instead of asking an expert simply add your job on rated people then a local electrician will contact you shortly to arrange a repair. To give you an idea of cost, the test should cost less than £150, and if the fuse has blown you should expect to pay less than £50 to install a new one.
