My electrics keep tripping out on the main switch

Posted by Richard Ball, on
My electrics keep tripping out on the main switch - none of the PCB's trip just the main switch, I have isolated or turned off most things to see if I can isolate what is causing the issue but sometimes goes for weeks without tripping or will trip 2-3 times a day randomly, have had all appliances patch tested and they are all fine, even put surge protectors on fridge in case it was a surge as the fridge started that was causing the issue - Any suggestions would be gratfully recived as this is driving me mad.

Hi Richard, when the fault next arrises unplug everything in the house then go back to consumer unit and reset, then go around the house plugging everything back in until you find the offending item,if this doesn't work then look up on rated people for an electrician who will carry out an inspection.

Hi Richard this is a common problem for a lot of people your main rcd is a very sensitive piece of equipment. It could be that it is quite old and therefore may need replacing as they do often after a long period of time fail to operate properly. But as the other electrician posted 9 times out of ten it Is an appliance that causes this to happen. Or it may be in the back of a light switch or socket that the insulation is poor and every now and then making contact with the metal of the back box. I would recommend an inspection on the installation. Good luck Darren.
